The Name of Jesus means so much to everyone whether consciously or unconsciously. The actual name is the Greek form of Joshua, and was defined by the angel to mean ‘Saviour’ (Mat.1:21).
Going back to Gen.3:15, we find that God promised a ‘seed’ through the woman. This seed was destined to put an end to the work of Satan, by crushing the Serpent’s head, although in doing so His heel would be bruised. So the Promised Seed was to destroy the works of darkness. He was the One who alone could save, and salvation entails remission of sins. So it was that a lamb must be provided. When Isaac asked, ‘"Father … where is the lamb for the burnt offering?"‘ Abraham answered, ‘"God will provide for Himself the lamb"‘ (Gen.22:7,8). Then, pictured in the Passover lamb, was the fact that no bone of Him was to be broken (Ex.12:46).
As Christ, He was also appointed to rule. The Spirit signified to Isaiah, ‘For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end’ (Is.9:6,7). And, ‘"Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel"‘ (Is.7:14). It is worthy of note that this sign was given by God Himself, and did not proceed from any other source.
A thorough search of Scripture, with closer devotional study, as well as paying particular attention to the divine pattern of worship as seen in Tabernacle and Temple, reveal the Old Testament in its entirety as containing prophecies and foreshadowings of Jesus Christ. Thus viewed, the Scriptures constrain the earnest inquirer to believe in Him, and have life in His Name.
